I grew up in a small town, where everyone knows everyone’s business. There really wasn’t a whole lot of privacy. I struggled in high school because of this. I was too busy trying to be “cool” instead of focusing on school work. I ended up falling behind in math and was unable to walk at graduation due to this. I also have a genetic disorder. Ehlers danlos syndrome. Along with many other health issues. Because of my disability I was nervous to go to college. I did not know how others would treat me for being different. I had just moved from Arizona to Pennsylvania. New town, strange people. I had never met. I knew college was going to rough at first. I did not have any friends or family here. I was scared to be judged, alone, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the school work. However this was not the case at all. I started school at Montgomery County Community College as a freshmen. I remember struggling to register for classes on my own. My academic adviser was wonderful. He helped me get set up in all the right classes. Knowing I had a disability I wanted to keep that hidden. I did not ask for assistance form my advisor. I remember the first day of school. Wondering around the large campus like a lost puppy with my tail between my legs. I saw a sign that said Student Life Center. Curiosity grew and I walked in. Great decision. There I met Ryan Bergman and Nate Lottes. They would guide me through school. Nate gave me a tour around campus. Ryan took me to all of my classes. I knew then I did not have to be afraid. I had made a few friends who did not judge me. They only wanted to help. Unfortunately as the year progressed I got sicker. My health rapidly worsened. I ended up falling behind in classes due to frequent hospitalizations. I had to drop out….
I did not let this stop me. I knew I wanted to go to school. And I would prevail. I was not going to let my disability stop me! Second attempt. As soon as I got my health under control. I tried again. This time I attended Delaware County community College. Great decision. This school made me feel at home from the very first day. I was nervous all over again. A new school, new town, new people. Professors I did not know. Turned out for the best. I overcame my fears and took three classes. I am over coming my struggles by using a tape recorder, a friend Courtney is writing notes for me, and my professors are extremely kind and helpful. By asking questions I will succeed this time.
This just goes to show, you can do anything you set your mind too. Yes the first year might be scary but once you met a few people and talk to your professors everything will be great.
