Class: We began class by talking about logical fallacies (faults in logic). Logical fallacies are cracks in your argument., common errors in reasoning that undermine your argument. Mangini gave several examples pertaining to everyday life, which lead into a conversation about causation vs. correlation. Causation is the act or process which produces/ causes an effect. Where as, correlation is the mutual relation of two or more things, parts, etc.. We also learned about found poetry, and creative non fiction. However, the main focus for the class was showing and telling writing. The difference is in showing writing you do exactly that, you show the reader a scene/ image. In telling writing you tell the writer about what happened without creating the same vivid image you would by using showing writing.
Home: Today is Thanksgiving, this is the first holiday in my 20 years of life that I have not celebrated. Since my fiancé's grandmother passed away the day after Thanksgiving last year, we decided that we did not want to celebrate today. Instead, we are spending the day watching movies and working on homework.
In a previous post I used the following telling language to explain a moment from my life:
I almost got in a car accident on the way to school. The car was in my lane going the wrong way.
Here, I will revise this telling language into a scene that shows a reader this same moment from my life.
I was on my way to school around 5:30pm driving through the pouring rain, when all of a sudden I saw head lights coming straight at me. Starting with my hands, I felt every muscle in my body tense, from my toes all the way to my neck and face. My heart raced as my car began to slide on the slippery wet road. The windshield fogged over and then it happened. The other car swerved back into it's own lane, seconds before it would have hit me.
