For this post, I was asked to write a reflection that communicates my processes of writing my Room for Debate assignment and One-Semester Memoir.
Room for Debate:
I collaborated with Arthur Gandy and Courtney Huff to compose our room for debate piece. Arthur asked if we would like to collaborate on this piece. We decided to write about gun control, because we felt this was a topic that the three of us could effectively write a well rounded argument for.
We spent some time after class discussing how to go about writing this, on the night the assignment was assigned. After that we tried to meet up several times in order to work on the paper, however our schedules just did not line up. So I ended up setting up a google docs page so we could work on the piece without having to meet in person.
It took us quite a while to come to a decision on what direction to go with this piece. We all had so many different ideas. After many late night texts we finally decided how to write about gun control. I did a decent amount of research, Courtney wrote the majority of the first draft, and Arthur did most of the editing. From there we all three made edits and added additional material.
Working on this project was a good reminder that collaborating is not always the easiest option, but in the end if you can work through disagreements, it will be well worth it.
One-Semester Memoir:
My One-Semester Memoir is by far the most challenging assignment I have written all semester. I spent a lot of time reading all of my previous posts in order to find that key moment I could write about. When I finally narrowed down my posts and found a significant moment, I copied the post to a word document and began to edit it. Once I had the piece written I asked Professor Mangini for feedback. He told me the idea is there, however the story is all over the place. I took his advice and rewrote the story. I still feel that it needs to be further revised, but my second draft is significantly better than the first.
